Environmental commitment: clean transport, sustainable crops and more recyclable packaging

Borges International Group is opting for sustainable transport on regular routes, entering into agreements with suppliers and including Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles in its transport fleet.

Borges International Group is moving towards sustainable agriculture-based crops and packaging more than 100 million single-dose units in recyclable packaging.

Borges International Group, in line to its commitment to the environment, is making great efforts to be sustainable in all its farming, industrial and commercial activities.

Sustainable mobility

On the logistics side, Borges International Group has implemented sustainable mobility policies by entering into an agreement with haulier Serveto for exclusive use of a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered truck to cover the route between the Tàrrega oil plant and Marseille, providing services to French affiliate Borges Tramier. By using this gas-powered truck for regular routes, Borges International Group is helping to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 85%, carbon dioxide by 20% and consumption by up to 10%. As an added benefit, these vehicles do not emit lead or heavy metals. To spread the word about our commitment to the environment, Borges has emblazoned the message “Committed to the Environment – Sustainable Transport” on the truck.

In line with this initiative, Borges has reached an agreement with “Transports F. Ramos” to cover most of the route travelled by olive oil from Andalusia to the plant in Tàrrega by rail in train tankers. The measure aims to reduce CO2 emissions on the route by up to 50%.

In another effort to reduce its emissions footprint, Borges International Group has provided employees with the first Autogas company vehicle, representing a 96% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a diesel vehicle and 33% compared to a petrol-driven car, as well as emitting no sulphur or lead.

Environmental conservation

The company’s industrial arm has obtained ECOSENSE certification based on its use of recycled plastics for manufacturing more than 100 million single-dose jars. This guarantees that packaging is recyclable and reintroduces this material for manufacturing new containers, contributing to the circular economy cycle.

When it comes to farming, the company is still moving toward sustainable agriculture, developing 904.9 new sustainable almond plantations and taking measures to gradually convert existing fields to a sustainable agriculture-based model. One example of this is its commitment to the EsAgua platform, the purpose of which is to make Borges an example to follow when it comes to reducing the water footprint and boosting sustainability, obtaining GLOBAL GAP certification for Good Agricultural Practices, an international standard for effective, sustainable farming practices. What’s more, Borges has 96.7 hectares devoted to environmental conservation and biodiversity.

This measure is enabling the Group to scale up environmental protection, offering sustainable solutions that help to reduce the environmental impact of its activities.
